OSWEGO, NY – Once again the students, faculty and staff of the Oswego High School have rallied for the cause of others.
A recent Red Cross Bloodmobile at the Ralph M. Faust Theatre was a tremendous success as 48 whole blood pints and six double red cell procedures provided a total of 59 pints of blood.
Oswego High School nurse Christina Chamberlain said, “We have hosted three blood drives this year and collected 149 pints which is considerably more than last year. We were told that we have qualified for the American Red Cross High School Scholarship Challenge Award for $350 scholarships to a graduating senior.â€
The generous donation of blood benefited many people.
Christopher Hoffman, Account Manager for the American Red Cross Blood Services noted, “Where the blood went after it left Oswego High School is a fascinating story. The blood was transported to West Henrietta that evening. The test tubes were transported via air to an American Red Cross testing lab just outside of Chicago. While the blood was in West Henrietta, the whole blood was separated into red blood cells (surgeries), platelets (cancer patients), and plasma (burns and accident victims), so it could help up to three patients. The double red cell units are ready-to-transfuse blood cells to help up to two patients.â€
Continuing he noted, “The Oswego student drive helped up to 304 hospital patients and the faculty drive helped up to 93 patients to provide assistance to nearly 400 patients.â€
