The dogs and cats waiting for their forever home at the Wanderers’ Rest Humane Association in Canastota are feeling a little bit more loved tonight thanks in part to a serving learning project coordinated by students in the Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Central School District .
Seventh grade students in the Family and Consumer Science class at the APW Junior/Senior High School made homemade dog biscuits as part of a cooking module in the class.
Similar to cutout cookies, but with dog-friendly ingredients, the students made the dough, rolled it out and then used cutouts to create various shapes and designs.
The students also collected pet supplies and blankets and one student made homemade jewelry and donated all of the profits from her sales to the classroom project.
Dee Schaefer, a humane educator from Wanderers’ Rest stopped by the FCS class to pick up the donations and speak to students about the humane association and the role they play in helping homeless, abandoned, and neglected animals find forever homes.
She shared some stories about the animals that they have rescued and brought three special friends with her – Rosie, Pebbles and Stuart Little, three dogs that were rescued through Wanderers’ Rest that found their forever home with Schaefer and her family.
