APW National Junior Honor Society Inductions

The Altmar-Parish-Williamstown (APW) Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) welcomed 15 new members at a ceremony in late March.

The new members include: Katie Alsworth, Mikenzie Barankovich, Marisa Barber, Caitlin Carty, Emily Catania, Andrianna Dehart, Megan Hart, Breanna Kalwarovski, Brianna Karboski, Abagail Mattison, Peyton Nadeau, Kyler Nichols, Timothy Palmer, Hannah Porter, and Rachel Trumble.

For consideration in NJHS, students must be in grades 7-9 at the APW Junior/Senior High School and possess the five character attributes associated with NJHS: scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship. More than just an academic recognition, members must be leaders of good character and well rounded citizens that are active in their school and community.

The APW Chapter of the NJHS was established in 1992.

Following a welcome by APW Junior High School Principal James Heffron, and history of NJHS by advisor James Watros, the current members and inductees took part in a candle lighting service which recognized the five member character attributes and then confirmed their acceptance into academic society with a pledge.

Current members then read the new candidates’ essays which were part of the application and selection process. In the essays the new inductees described the qualities and characteristics that they feel embodies members of the NJHS.

Many of the essays talked about hard work, leadership, doing the right thing, helping others, and going above and beyond of what is expected.

But, Caitlin Carty’s essay best summarized NJHS as an honor that requires a person to have a brain and a heart.

In closing, NJHS advisor Mr. James Watros left the students with some inspiring words by John Quincy Adams: “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”

A reception for all NJHS members and their guests was held following the induction ceremony.
