“Born out of necessity, embraced for opportunity.”
These are the words that Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Central School Superintendent of Schools Gerry Hudson used to describe the building project that transformed the face, landscape, and future of the APW School District.
He spoke these words during a reconfiguration and ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the culmination of months of design, development, and construction on the district’s pre-kindergarten through grade six elementary school and grades seven through twelve junior/senior high school.
Community members, Board of Education members, both past and present, along with students, their parents, and faculty members were in attendance for the ceremony and were recognized for their unwavering commitment, vision, support, and sacrifice for the project and during the renovation.
“We are a school district for the 21st Century, you have created a learning environment that will launch the young people of our District into success for years to come,” Hudson said while standing in the new junior/senior high school gymnasium.
Nicholas Signorelli from Ashley McGraw Architects was on-hand for the ceremony, sharing some of the unique, energy-efficient features that have been incorporated into the project including: classrooms with south facing windows; a trombe wall that is designed to absorb heat during the day, store it, and then radiate heat evenly on an as-needed basis; solar shading devices; light deflecting baffles; and a photovoltaic system that uses solar panels to produce any additional electricity that is needed for a space.
Faculty members offered guided tours of the buildings and new spaces, giving visitors an opportunity to see some of the energy-efficient features, new classrooms, and the focus wall and light well that have been incorporated into the instructional areas.
APW broke ground on the capital project in June of 2010.
