APW Welcomes a New Class of UPK Students

The Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Central School District (APW) welcomed a new class of Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) students and hosted an orientation for the new students and their family members. The APW UPK program is located at Altmar Elementary School and families visiting during the orientation were given an opportunity to explore the classroom and the school’s facilities. Students met their teachers and their classmates, located a few important items in the classroom such as their own personalized cubby and the special classroom bear, Mr. Quentin T. Bear, and also decorated a birthday candle for the classroom’s birthday board.

The APW UPK program still has a few remaining openings for 2011-2012 school year. The program, taught by a New York State certified teacher and teaching assistant, is open to children turning four years old on or before December 1, 2011. It is a half-day program offered five days per week with a morning or afternoon session and follows the same school calendar observed by the APW district. Students in the UPK program are given the freedom to experiment, explore, seek and question while learning to interact with children their own age and adults. Most importantly, the program encourages students to reach their highest potential, fosters listening and communicating skills, and prepares them for the APW kindergarten program. The APW UPK program is federally funded and is free to all qualifying residents.
