OSWEGO, NY – SUNY Oswego presented scholarships and other awards to more than 100 students — including several from the area — at the college’s 2018 Honors Convocation.
The formal ceremony, complete with a procession of faculty and college officers in full academic regalia, is sponsored each spring at Oswego by Vega, the women’s honor society.
The audience included faculty, staff, students and students’ family members.
Rachael Bishop of South Fourth Street in Fulton, a recent graduate majoring in communication and social interaction , received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. Bishop will be pursuing a master’s degree in communication arts and sciences at Pennsylvania State University and also serve as a graduate assistant.
Kayla Cook of Gale Road in Cleveland, a sophomore majoring in adolescence education and English, received the Father Robert E. Hall Memorial Scholarship and the Class of 1953 Memorial Scholarship. Cook plans to attend graduate school at SUNY Oswego and obtain a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction.
Veronica Devries of Walpole Court in Fairport, a senior majoring in political science and graphic design, received the Outstanding Achievement in Political Science Award.
Alyssa Bleau of Wood Ridge Lane in Fulton, a senior majoring in childhood education , received the R. Lee Martin Award. Bleau plans to pursue a career as an elementary school teacher and continue on to graduate school.
Jessica Doherty of County Route 4 in Central Square, a senior majoring in economics , received the Outstanding Senior In Economics Award.
Admission to SUNY Oswego is competitive. U.S. News Media Group counts SUNY Oswego among the top public regional universities in the North for 2018, and the Princeton Review includes Oswego in its 2018 college guidebook “The Best Northeastern Colleges” and in its national list of “Green Colleges.”
