Being a parent can bring a lot of joy but also challenges. Parents of children with special needs often have no one to turn to who understands their situation. With funding received from the Family Support Services Council ARISE was able to host a group for parents while their children participated in social skills classes. Kathy Auyer, guidance counselor, and Angela Voniski, school psychologist, facilitated the group. The group met for six sessions. Over dinner the parents discussed stress as well as stress management, educational advocacy, wellness and learned from an occupational therapist ideas for sensory stimulation.

One mother stated that just knowing that someone else understands what it is like to raise a child with special needs was so important. Another group will be held in the fall. For more information about this as well as the social skills classes, please contact Sabine Ingerson at ARISE 342-4088×210.
