State Sen. Darrel J. Aubertine today talked about the job creation opportunities in Oswego County, much of which centers on the Port of Oswego and the energy industry. The Senator met with local officials and supporters at his campaign office to rally support in the closing days until the election.
“Our economy is the number one issue in this campaign and this port is one of our great assets as we engage in economic development efforts in this county,” Sen. Aubertine said. “It’s a major selling point for new investment and its development is vital to our economic future.”
The Senator pointed to the recent announcement that the port could soon be linked to the $300 million Melford International Terminal under development along the Strait of Canso in Nova Scotia. This would mean a $3 million investment to make our port the only one on the Great Lakes for international ships to bring in standardized cargo boxes that can move product directly from a ship to trucks and rail cars for transport.
“This would make the Oswego Port a 24/7 operation with 30 new jobs on the ship yards alone,” Sen. Aubertine said. “More jobs would come our way as Oswego County grows as a center for industry. The port is used throughout the year to bring in and ship cement asphalt, fuel oil, corn, soy beans, fertilizers, aluminum, and other materials crucial to local industry. This new operation would make bulk shipping even more cost effective and this port is going to be busier than ever pushing our economy forward.”
The Senator praised the work of the port’s Director Jonathan Daniels and emphasized his commitment to working with Mr. Daniels and others over the coming years to build the economy here, especially through the growing energy industry and opportunities for companies creating environmentally sustainable products.
“We have the resources, the work force and the resolve to build our economy for the 21st Century with jobs that cannot be outsourced,” Sen. Aubertine said. “We have a great future here in Central and Northern New York where a vibrant economy can be a reality. I am committed to working for us to cut red tape, lower taxes and foster the economic environment we need.”
The Senator took the time to rally his supporters for the final days of the election season.
“We’re closing in on November 4 and there’s going to be a lot more hard work from now until Election Day,” Sen. Aubertine said. “I’m going to need your help because this campaign isn’t about me. It’s about all of us. It’s about these jobs and everyone getting the fair representation they deserve, whether you’re a Democrat, Republican or an independent. It’s not about politics. It’s about people and I will continue working hard for everyone.”
