Assemblyman Will Barclay said he was pleased to meet all of the Summer Reading Challengers who attended the Summer Reading Celebration and Dream Big READ! event recently.
Assemblyman Barclay challenges school-age children to read for 15 minutes a day for 40 days throughout the summer months, with an adult or on their own.
This year more than 100 kids participated in the reading challenge.
Barclay had the opportunity to congratulate some of the challengers at the recent Dream Big READ! in conjunction with Literacy Coalition of Oswego County.
The coalition consists of area librarians, teachers and community members who have an interest in improving the literacy rate in Oswego County.
The event drew about 300 people.
Barclay awarded certificates and read a book in the cafeteria.
Assemblyman Barclay’s Chief of Staff Jennifer Cook co-chaired the event.
“I am pleased that every year the response to the program grows. More teachers, librarians and parents help circulate the brochures and take the time to explain the program. I strongly believe in this challenge. Reading skills are determining factors in children’s success in school. Study after study show that the harder reading is for a child, the less likely they are to succeed in the classroom. That’s why it’s important for parents and grandparents, teachers and older role models to instill a love of books and literature for children,” said Barclay.
