BOCES Practical Nursing Class Performs Pediatric Assessment Lab

As Thanksgiving passes by and the holiday season continues, it often brings up thoughts of new beginnings, whether it’s in the form of starting a new calendar year or a New Years resolution. Students in the Oswego County BOCES Adult Education Practical Nursing program definitely have these concepts on their minds as they are nearing the completion of their educational program. A final pinning ceremony will be held to mark the end of the class on December 10th.

The Practical Nursing program is divided into two phases. Phase one includes Basic Skills, Drug Administration, Pharmacology, Anatomy and Physiology, Nutrition, Mental Health I and students earn their certificate as a Certified Nurse Assistant. Phase two includes Medical-Surgical Nursing, Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Mental Health II and Senior Experience. Students gain understanding through a wide array of learning in classroom, labs and clinical experiences. The pediatric assessments held recently were essential to the completion of the pediatric portion of the class.

Recently those students participated in a Pediatric Assessments Lab in their classroom at OCB where they obtained and recorded crucial patient information such as: vision and hearing testing, height, weight, vital signs, body mass index (BMI), Glucose screening, heart and lung sounds. Most of the students used their own children in the hands-on lab to gather the information, and some even “borrowed” children from friends and family. The children ranged in age from infant to young adult and all seemed happy to assist and especially enjoyed visiting the classroom where their parent attends school.
