Oswego County BOCES students from the Fourth Street School in Fulton and enrolled in the Stepping Stones Day Program joined forces to participate in a “Hoops For Heart” American Heart Association fundraising challenge and raise funds for research to discover critical advancements in heart disease and stroke treatment and prevention.

The students kicked off their fundraising initiative in early March with a letter writing campaign where they wrote personalized letters to OCB staff members requesting monetary sponsorships to support the school’s participation in a 60-minute basketball challenge. Some students also asked family members and friends to sponsor them in the challenge.
Meg Gibbons, Youth Market Director at the American Heart Association joined the students for their 60-minute challenge on March 26 where she talked to students about how a pattern of regular exercise and healthy eating can keep their hearts healthy.
OCB Adaptive Physical Education Teacher Kelly Schulz organized several activities during the 60-minute challenge including a basketball game and shooting, dribbling and basketball-handling drills.

To recognize the students for their commitment to the ‘Hoops For Heart’ fundraising initiative, teachers and staff members offered to accept and perform unique challenges from the students at the event. Mrs. Schulz wore a red tutu and had to make a basketball shot while duct taped to a chair; OCB Special Education Supervisor Chuck Pehta took a pie in the face; and OCB Teaching Assistant Anna Phillips faced her fears and touched a snake.
OCB students’ efforts generated $437 for the American Heart Association.
