Students in Mary Ryan’s Exceptional Education classroom took a field trip recently to Beaver Lake Nature Center and snowshoed with a naturalist to a sugar bush.

The naturalist took students through the history of sugaring, the process of photosynthesis and how sap is created.
Students also learned how maple trees are tapped, sap is collected and eventually boiled down to maple syrup, sugar, candy or cream.
In social studies, students are learning about how Native Americans originated this centuries-old process, and how technology has changed the technique.
