Camp Hollis to Host Family Day of Play

OSWEGO TOWN, NY – The Child Advocacy Center of Oswego County and the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau will host a Family Day of Play at Camp Hollis on April 28 from noon to 4 p.m.

Open to all youth and their families, the Family Day of Play is free of charge and will provide an opportunity for children and adults to interact with each other and enjoy a day of fun, play and learning.

The day will feature a number of child and family friendly activities that will provide interaction in a safe environment.

Many local agencies will be represented as well.

“Childhood should be a time of innocence, safety, and play, but we know all too well that many children do not have this opportunity,” said Karrie Damm, executive director of the Child Advocacy Center of Oswego County. “Many children live in worlds where there is poverty, violence, and stress, however, we believe that children in these environments, like all children, deserve the opportunity to be shown care, love, and compassion from their community. It only takes a few individuals to make a difference and have the courage to demonstrate to children that good people do exist in their world.  We invite community members to become ‘Playmakers’ and take action to make great things happen in the lives of children. We invite children, adults, guardians, and their families to join us for this unique day of family fun and learning!”

Damm added that there are also plenty of opportunities for area businesses, organizations and other agencies to be involved in the Family Day of Play.

“We are looking for caring business and individuals who would like to help sponsor the event by providing child friendly games, arts and crafts, or food,” she said.

The Family Day of Play is one of several events that the Child Advocacy Center of Oswego County is participating in as it recognizes April as National Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month.

Located at 301 Beech St. in Fulton, the CAC is a non-profit organization that works hand-in-hand with local law enforcement, prosecution, child protective services, medical providers, mental health providers, and victim advocacy professionals in Oswego County to protect and serve child victims of sexual and physical abuse.

In 2012 the CAC provided advocacy and mental health services to more than 300 children and families in Oswego County.
