Caring Communities: Donors For APW’s Backpack Program

Recent donations from the community taken in by the Backpack Program at APW.

ALTMAR-PARISH-WILLIAMSTOWN – With times being tough for all right now, the Backpack Program at Altmar-Parish-Williamstown is trying to ease the struggles for many families around the district.

“Right now, we are sending 62 bags a week to nearly 180 children,” said Michelle Dye, physical education teacher at APW.

Dye is just part of why the backpack program has been so successful. She. along with the Metcalfs (Nate and Christy), fill bags full of food to for families in need. The program provides recipients with enough food for all seven days of the week.

“The word has spread, and community members along with people outside the community, have been donating to the program,” Dye said. “We even had a former student start a collection on Facebook and he raised more than $2,000.”

The program is always accepting donations of nonperishable items such as macaroni and cheese, pasta, soups, tuna fish, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, granola bars and similar type snacks.

“We are extremely grateful for all the donations and the continued donations of community members,” Dye said.

If you are interested in donating, you can drop off your donations to the APW bus garage from 8 a.m. till noon. any day of the week except Wednesday.  missing or outdated ad config
