OSWEGO, NY – The Parent Education Program at Catholic Charities of Oswego County will soon be offering an informative parenting workshop.
Research has shown that parenting is an ongoing process where parents grow and adapt to meet the needs of their children. This workshop will offer information and techniques that will help parents meet some of the challenges of raising their children and provide parents with the skills to encourage acceptable and appropriate behaviors.
“Active Parenting Now” is an interactive video-based learning experience that provides parents of children ages 5 – 12 with a skills-focused model of parenting. This is a comprehensive six-session program that stresses parenting skills rather than theory.
Program supervisor Andrea Burritt explains, “This interactive, workshop uses practices that have proven effective in keeping parents and other caregivers stimulated and engaged in the learning process.â€
She added that those attending the workshop would learn a variety of important parenting skills such as:
- Being an active parent
- Winning cooperation
- How to communicate effectively with children
- How to discipline while teaching responsibility
- How to encourage the development of self-esteem, courage, and character
- How to redirect misbehavior and sidestep power struggles
- How to explore and encourage nonviolent conflict resolution inside the home and out.
The “Active Parenting Now” workshop is open to the public and will be offered, free of charge, Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m. – noon beginning Sept. 14 and continuing through Oct. 19.
The workshop will be held in the Community Center at Hamilton Homes, 96 Hamilton St.
Kinship Support Program coordinator Jon Gilmore and parent educator Sarah Tryon will co-facilitate the workshop.
Those attending and actively participating in all six classes will receive a Certificate of Completion at the end of the workshop.
