OSWEGO COUNTY – Looking to enjoy a fun, educational spring break without traveling? Disconnect from electronic devices and re-connect with each other by participating in Screen-Free Week! From Saturday, April 20 to Saturday, April 27, organizations throughout Pulaski, Sandy Creek, Richland and Williamstown offer a variety of non-electronic activities for families to enjoy during the school break.
Ainsworth Memorial Library
Throughout the week, the Ainsworth Memorial Library offers board games, a scavenger hunt, word games, puzzles and more. In addition to screen-free week activities, the library also hosts its regular programs, including a Little Readers Story Time on Monday, April 22 at 10:30 a.m., the Overbooked Adult Book Club on Tuesday, April 23 at 4 p.m. and LEGO Free Play at 11 a.m. on Saturdays.
Located at 6064 S. Main St., Sandy Creek, the library is open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Amboy 4-H Environmental Center
On Monday, April 22, celebrate Earth Day at the Amboy 4-H Environmental Center, located at 748 NYS Rte. 183, Williamstown. People can learn about different ways to make a positive impact on the planet and each other, as well as enjoy a make-and-take craft and a sweet treat.
The Center also celebrates Arbor Day with ‘Walk & Talk: Trees’ on Friday, April 26 at 10 a.m. Participants can walk the trails and learn about different tree species and their unique characteristics.
The fee for each of these events is $4 per person or $12 per family, and free for children aged three and under free.
Half-Shire Historical Society
On Tuesday, April 23, head over to the Half-Shire Historical Society for a free magic show and light lunch from noon to 2 p.m. The event is sponsored in part by Rural Migrant Ministry of Richland and donations are welcome.
Come back to the historical society from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24 for board games and snacks. Attendees can choose from an assortment of games to play together and enjoy a light lunch with fruit, salad, soup, snacks and ice cream. The event is sponsored by Rural Migrant Ministry of Richland.
Located at 1100 Co. Rte. 48, Richland, the Half-Shire Historical Society is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day of Screen-Free Week, offering board games to play, assistance with family research, and light snacks and refreshments.
Salmon River Fine Arts Center
The Salmon River Fine Arts Center, located at 4848 Jefferson St., Pulaski, also participates in screen free week fun! Thursday, April 25 through Saturday, April 27, the center offers free art activities from 1 to 3 p.m.
Selkirk Shores State Park
Located at 7101 NYS Rte. 3, Pulaski, Selkirk Shores State Park hosts activities all week, including a storybook trail on Goose Foot and a solar system trail on Frog Pond each day. People can stop by the office between 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. April 20 through April 27 for free popcorn and outdoor activity sheets.
On Sunday, April 21 from 11 a.m. to noon, Selkirk offers a workshop on making pinecone bird feeders at the open shelter. On Monday, April 22 families can participate in a guided scavenger hunt bingo, with one session beginning at noon from Frog Pond to Goose Foot trail and another session beginning at 1 p.m. at the Lakeshore trail. Both hikes begin and end at the enclosed shelter.
On Friday, April 26 from 1:30 to 3 p.m., come out to the park for “Paint & Participate.” The event gives people the opportunity to paint their own sunset dune portrait while learning about the dunes and wetlands. Supplies are provided, and registration is required. Call 315-298-5737 to sign up.
Williamstown Public Library
The Williamstown Public Library hosts a free tissue paper painting class sponsored by Ricard Grange at 6 p.m. on Monday, April 22. Call 315-298-5938 to sign up. On Wednesday, April 24, the library hosts story time at 10 a.m. The event includes a story, lesson, snack, a craft and a book to take home.
Located at 2877 Co. Rte. 17, Williamstown, the library also offers games and puzzles available to be borrowed on an honor-based system, as well as the Never Before Read Books drawing for teens and adults.
