SANDY CREEK — A trio from Mexico Elementary School reigned supreme at the recent annual countywide Battle of the Books competition for grades 3 and 4.

The team of Emma Belfield, Ian Bigelow and Jesse Marthia took on several other teams from schools around Oswego County during the event and emerged victorious, capturing first place.
“I’m so proud of them and their hard work, their dedication to the task and their fun attitudes,” said Mexico Elementary Librarian and team coach Dianne Barnes.
Competing under the team name “The Think Tank,” the trio read and studied 10 books since the beginning of the year. In competition, teams were challenged to recall specific details about the books.
It was the third win this season for Belfield, Bigelow and Marthia as they also defeated three other teams at the Mexico Elementary competition and was best of six teams in the district-wide competition.
The countywide Battle of the Books clash was held in Sandy Creek on March 12 with four levels of competition by grade level. In addition to Mexico, teams from Fulton, Phoenix and Sandy Creek also walked away as winners.
