FULTON, NY – While most people know what the yellow ribbon and the pink ribbon represent, Karrie Damm, executive director of the Child Advocacy Center of Oswego County, wants the community to be just as familiar with the blue ribbon and what it represents.
“The blue ribbon represents the battle against child abuse. I encourage our community members to help us get that message across by showing their support for our efforts during our eighth annual Blue Ribbon Ride Against Child Abuse,” explained Damm.
As part of the event Damm said that she would like to see community members displaying blue ribbons along the Blue Ribbon Ride route. Scheduled for Sept. 10, the CAC’s Blue Ribbon Ride, a 70-mile ride through Oswego County, will begin at 10 a.m. at Wheel-A-way Motorsports on Route 57 in Fulton. Traveling north into Fulton the ride will take County Route 3 east and then north passing through the villages of Palermo and Mexico as it heads to County Route 13 west where it will pass through Pulaski to Richland to County Route 12 south to Route 104 West to Route 11. The ride will continue south on County Route 11 into Central Square where it will take County Route 49 west to Route 3 west and return to Wheel-A-Way Motorsports on Route 57 just south of Fulton.
“I would love to see the community be a part of our ride by displaying blue ribbons in windows, on doors, tied around trees, anywhere they can be displayed. We are looking to raise awareness of child abuse in Oswego County and educate people on the significance of the blue ribbon. I invite everyone to join us in our efforts and Go Blue!” she said.
Damm added that following the Blue Ribbon Ride community members are welcome to attend a family friendly picnic that will be hosted by Wheel-A-Way Motorsports. Beginning at approximately 11:30 a.m. the picnic will include a barbecue lunch from The Limp Lizard BBQ in Syracuse, live music from the bands Stir Up The Gravy and Bratz and Blondz, and children’s activities and plenty of drawings.
Drivers and riders interested in participating in the ride may register the day of the event. A $30 donation per driver and a $20 donation per passenger are requested. Riders who obtain $150 or more in donations will ride and dine for free. Day of registration will begin at 9 a.m. with the ride beginning at 10 a.m. Those not participating in the ride, the picnic is $10 for adults, $7 for children and includes lunch and entertainment. All proceeds from the event will benefit the CAC’s “Go Blue! for Kids” Campaign which focuses on child abuse awareness and prevention.
The CAC is a non-profit organization that works hand-in-hand with local law enforcement, prosecution, child protective services, medical providers, mental health providers, and victim advocacy professionals in Oswego County to protect and serve child victims of sexual and physical abuse. In 2010 the CAC served more than 240 children and families in Oswego County. In response to those numbers, the CAC opened a satellite office in Pulaski earlier this year. Located at 4822 Salina St., the new location allows the CAC to better serve the northern part of Oswego County.
