Child Passenger Technicians Serve Families In Oswego County

On April 20 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., a car seat safety check will be held in the city of Oswego at the new Menter Ambulance satellite location, 388 W. First St.

Safety seat checks are held monthly and feature nationally certified technicians to help parents and caregivers install the right seat in their car securely every time.

CPS techs come from all walks of life – law enforcement, educators, bus drivers, medical staff, business owners, moms, dads and grandparents.

Requirements involve an extensive course in child safety, practical and written exams, attendance at public seat checks, and staying up to date with new child passenger data and information.

Technicians have a variety of day jobs and are dedicated to helping children travel safer in Oswego County.

Legislator Jim Oldenburg volunteers his time and expertise as a child passenger tech, as do many other individuals.

Amongst our ranks, in the city of Oswego, two officers at the Oswego City Police Department are certified, two officers at the SUNY Oswego Police Department, one tech located at OCO in Fulton, and three public educators for the Oswego County Public Health Dept have maintained their national certification.

Two CPS Techs are also available at the Child Care and Development Council, and our CPS Instructors, Margaret Beers, at Oswego Hospital, and Dave Martin, RN, working at Crouse Hospital in Infection Control.

Oswego County’s participation in child passenger safety has had an active history for the past 15 years, and currently has 18 certified techs throughout the county.

Oswego County BOCES in Mexico currently has four techs, with one of those technicians, Kathy Jamerson, working towards completing training to become an instructor.

Child safety seat checks are free events sponsored by important safety partners like Menter Ambulance and WIC and supported by a grant from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.
