When Kerrie Schremp’s 2016-2017 first grade students at Lanigan Elementary advance to second grade and learn the Common Core unit on community, they’ll already have a solid foundation from her classroom.
The veteran teacher recently hosted a class picnic at Volney Town Park because her most recent class formed such a strong bond with her, as did their parents.
That was the first time in her 17 years teaching career she organized a summer party to keep those connections alive.
“For me, it’s been my number one priority to make that rapport for my kids right off the bat,” Schremp said.
Throughout the 2016-2017 school year, Schremp emphasized the first grade social-emotional learning and the school’s character education traits to help build a sense of community in the classroom, throughout the school and with her students’ families.
Ava Bartholomew ran up to Schremp at the picnic and gave her a big hug.
“She always cheered me up when I was sad,” Ava said, as she noted science lessons were her favorite taught by Schremp.
Open communication with students and their parents and/or guardians has been key, Schremp said. With the help of the families, she said the students’ determination and perseverance helped them crush their academic and personal goals.
Schremp said she is looking forward to the 2017-2018 school year, and will be happy to give hugs and high fives to her 2016-2017 students.
