Cleanup Scheduled for Lake Ontario’s Shoreline

OSWEGO – David Cuevas, a local AmeriCorps member serving Oswego County’s Youth Bureau, is planning a shoreline cleanup as part of the Alliance for the Great Lakes’ Adopt-a-Beach Program.

About 13,000 volunteers participate each year in cleanups and assess environmental conditions on beaches and shorelines on all five Great Lakes, clearing tens of thousands of pounds of litter from their shorelines.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on July 22.

This cleanup of Lake Ontario’s shorelines will take place between Bev’s Dairy Treat and SUNY Oswego’s west campus along County Route 89 in Oswego.

The registration table and meet up location will be located adjacent to Bev’s Dairy Treat, 43 County Route 89.

Participants enhance beaches by picking up trash and recording their findings in the Alliance for the Great Lakes’ online Adopt-a-Beach system, Cuevas explained.

This information is logged into the Adopt-a-Beach online system, made accessible to the public and shared with local beach health officials as well as others working toward improvements.

Beach adoption is easy and open to everyone.

Volunteers are encouraged to register online for the cleanup at www.greatlakesadopt.org
