Committee Fires Up Stuff A Bus Campaign

OSWEGO, NY – It’s never too early to starting thinking how to “Stuff a Bus.”

Recently, a committee gathered to kick off the eleventh year of this worthwhile program.

Once again the United Way, Oswego County Opportunities and school districts from throughout the county are involved.

The United Way’s Melanie Trexler and Jo Ann Conzone, of the Oswego City School District, are co-chairs for this year’s event.

The “Stuff A Bus” program helps in funding school supplies for children throughout the county. Each district supports the program in a variety of ways. Busses will be located throughout the county on August 15 and local residents will have the opportunity to stuff the bus with school supplies.

Parents and students will be able to go to the building dedicated in their district to pick up supplies on August 17.

The project was created as the result of a very important need. Every year, the United Way and agencies in the community would be flooded by calls asking where parents could get school supplies for their children. Food pantries had little to none of these.

Last year, approximately 1,400 students from throughout the county were served by this program. The effort is conducted in an organized manner allowing for distribution in every school district.

There have been expanded efforts to support “Stuff A Bus”. Paper  busses have been created. Many more businesses this year opted to sell the busses for one dollar each. The money collected goes toward the purchase of supplied not ordinarily donated such as back packs and calculators.

One special fundraiser that is scheduled will be the Harborfest Breakfast on July 28 at the Club House Tavern on West Second Street from 8-11:30 a.m. with all proceeds going to purchase school supplies.
