The start of SUNY Oswego’s fall semester will include introducing students to volunteer opportunities around town during Community Involvement Day on Sunday, Aug. 31.
Community Involvement Day expands the previous Project Serve, which was geared toward freshmen. This year all students are invited to participate in a few hours of volunteer activities at such sites as Fort Ontario, Camp Hollis and Trinity Catholic School, as well as cleaning local parks, visiting nursing homes and supporting a Special Olympics field day.
One drive will involve students going door to door from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. seeking perishable food donations for the Human Concerns Center food pantry and Salvation Army.
The afternoon will include a downtown scavenger hunt — to help students become more familiar with Oswego — and ice cream social.
“We’re trying to get students more involved with the community, in terms of volunteer opportunities and the services that are available,” said Alyssa Amyotte, coordinator of service learning and community service at SUNY Oswego. “When you’re a student here, you’re not only a member of the campus, but also of the city of Oswego community as well.”
As of mid-August, more than 200 students had signed up, she said.
Community Involvement Day is part of a whole week of activities welcoming Oswego’s 8,500 students to campus. Classes begin Aug. 27.
