Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County is offering their annual workshop for dairy producers and managers looking for ideas to assist them in managing their farm on Thursday, April 1, 2010, from 11 am –3 pm at the Cooperative Extension office, 3288 Main Street, Mexico, NY. As any dairy farmer knows, milk production changes unpredictably from day-to-day, month-to-month, and year-to-year. This seminar is designed to assist dairy producers to address the challenges in managing their farm in current dairy economic conditions. In these challenging economic times, dairy producers need sound research to improve economic net margins in order to remain competitive. Strategies in maximizing milk premiums, feeding high forage diets, as well as what the status of milk prices paid to farmers this year will be emphasized. Topics to be discussed include:
11 am – Dr. Mark Stephenson, Cornell University Dept. of Dairy Markets and Policy will discuss the current dairy economic situation and current milk price forecast for 2010.
1 pm – Dr. Larry Chase, Cornell University Dept. of Animal Science will speak about feeding high forage diets to dairy cows
2 pm – Gary Bennett, DVM with Quality Milk Production Services will speak on improving milk quality to achieve quality premiums.
