If you are a commercial vegetable producer, don’t miss this workshop! Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County is sponsoring a “2010 Spring Vegetable Growers Seminar†on Friday, March 19th, 2009 from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Granby Community Center, 820 County Rte. 8, Fulton, NY. This seminar will emphasize strategies to prevent economic loss from bacterial diseases affecting onions, biological weed control strategies utilizing cover crops like buckwheat, soil fertility, and good agricultural practices that promote food safety. Topics to be discussed include:
10 am – Dr. Steven V. Beer, Professor of Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology at Cornell University, will present causes for bacterial problems in onions and control measures.
11 am – Dr. Thomas Bjorkman, Associate Professor of Vegetable Crop Physiology at Cornell University, will discuss biological weed control strategies utilizing cover crops like buckwheat after the vegetable harvest to suppress nuisance grasses and broadleaf wees.
12:50 pm Dr. Steven Reiners, Associate Professor Dept. of Horticulture Sciences at NYS Ag Experiment Station will speak on soil fertility and things a grower can do to reduce their fertilizer budget.
2 pm – Jonathan J. Schell, Agriculture Team Coordinator, CCE Oswego County, will discuss the importance of good agricultural practice plans that help reduce microbial risks to fresh fruits and vegetables.
2.5 NYS DEC recertification credits have been approved in categories 1a, 10 and 23. The cost of the program is $20 and includes lunch. Registration is required by Wednesday, March 17, 2010.
