Cosmetology students make the cut at St. Baldrick’s event

Students enrolled in the Oswego County BOCES cosmetology program took their classroom knowledge to the Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center on March 30 for the St. Baldrick’s Day head-shaving fundraising tradition.

The annual event aims to generate money for childhood cancer research, with participants collecting donations and then getting their heads shaved in solidarity.

With more than 200 people lining up to have their heads shaved, a 21-person team from OCB helped keep the line moving.

“(Our team) shaved about 100 heads in donation of our time,” said OCB cosmetology instructor Rose Hartman.

According to Hartman, there were all types of people who had their heads shaved – males, females, high school seniors and senior citizens.

Hair longer than 12 inches was placed into a ponytail and then cut.

Hartman said that the 25 ponytails that were collected will be donated to Wigs for Kids and Locks of Love.

In addition to donating their time, the OCB cutting crew chipped in $250.

Roughly $150 of that amount was raised during a Cut-a-Thon held March 21 at the Mexico BOCES campus.

During that event, cosmetology students cut family members’ hair, colored hair and did manicures for a donation to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
