OSWEGO, NY – The local Red Cross Chapter has changes its name to The Red Cross of Central New York.
It is a regional chapter including chapters in Central New York.
The Red Cross currently works as a national organization responding to disasters.
Changes have been made in disaster services since Hurricane Katrina.
Before Katrina the largest disaster in the U.S. the Red Cross raised $2.2 billion. All states provide helped.
Twenty-seven states provide shelter for displaced families.
Before Katrina the American Red Cross had 25,000 disaster volunteers.
It was felt that was enough.
Now there are 100,000 volunteers ready to respond to national disasters.
National standards require training.
The Red Cross partners with religious based organizations during disasters.
A total of 37,000 mental health professionals are available to provide disaster care during and emergency.
