OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego City School District received a $20,000 grant from Entergy to support a collaborative, writing project for teachers and students.
Teachers College at Columbia University, the State University College at Oswego, and the Oswego City School District will be offering Summer Writing Institutes for teachers in the Oswego City School District as well as to teachers in Oswego County and Onondaga County school districts.
Recently, Jim Feeney and Patti Ponzi of Entergy visited the Kingsford Park Elementary School to present the Oswego City School District with a $20,000 check for “The Power’ Of Writing: Creating Exceptional Writers in Oswego and Onondaga County†project.
The grant, from the Entergy Charitable Foundation, supports charitable organizations where Entergy customers and employees reside.
The goal of the foundation is to support initiatives that help create and sustain thriving communities.
Teacher Joan Dain noted the donation means that, “The Institutes, led by staff developers from Teachers College at Columbia University and teacher leaders within the Oswego City School District, brings a community of learners together to study methods, design curricula, and create high quality writing experiences for students.â€Â
Continuing she explained further benefits of the generous donation.
She said, “Lab classrooms, highlighting how students develop into proficient writers, will be set-up within the Oswego City School District. In addition, continued professional development for Oswego City School District teachers will take place throughout the school year with Teachers College at Columbia University and the State University College at Oswego. Over 2,000 students and 100 teachers will be serviced through this grant.â€Â
Superintendent of Schools Bill Crist noted, “Community support is important and I thank Entergy for its commitment to the professional development of our staff and the educational support for our students. This is a tremendous donation and it is very much appreciated.â€Â
Participating teacher and strong supporter of the program, Hope Mazuroski said, “I am thrilled and excited as this donation will allow our district to continue to move forward with the units of study and allow us to bring highly qualified teachers from Teacher’s College at Columbia University to provide staff development to the teachers of the Oswego City School District. This will allow us, as educators, to continue to provide the best teaching practices possible in writing and move our children forward into the future. This money will help our district provide staff development to a larger population of educators because without this money it wouldn’t be possible.”
Continuing she said, “Entergy has seen first-hand in the classroom how the children have responded to this type of writing program and we are very fortunate to be able to continue this writing momentum with their support and enthusiasm for the children of this district.â€Â
Director of Literacy Laura Ryder summarized the meaning of this donation as she said, “Without the professional development the Units of Study for Writing would not continue to grow and multiply across buildings and grade levels.”
