Friendly competition is on at Fairgrieve Elementary School to see which children’s book is the top favorite to receive the coveted Charlotte Award.
Library media specialist Barb Senecal read 10 books to each student in younger grade levels before they voted on their favorite story.
Students in older grades could read the material on their own and will cast their votes at a later date.
A program of the New York State Reading Association, the Charlotte Award is a means to encourage children to read literature and become lifelong learners.
The award is named after the main character in the book “Charlotte’s Web.” Voting ends May 30 and awards will be presented during the NYSRA conference in the fall.
During a recent visit to the library, Senecal treated students in Scott Earl’s third grade class to readings of Charlotte Award entries “Sparky!” by Jenny Offill and “Too Much Glue” by Jason Lefebvre. Earl’s students overwhelmingly selected “Too Much Glue” as their top pick.
Students in grades kindergarten through second already voted on their favorite books, to which “The Book with No Pictures” by B.J. Novak received the most votes.
Senecal said it’s encouraging to see the contest spark further student interest in a variety of books.
