Fairley Elementary School students kicked off their ceramics unit in art class with a recent presentation on pottery making from Mark and Cathy Lukacs, owners of Lukacs Studios Pottery in Sodus Point.

The Lukacs spent three days at the school teaching students in kindergarten through fourth grade how to work with clay on a pottery wheel to create household items, such as bowls and coffee mugs.
“This gives them the opportunity to see professional artists making a living doing art,” said art teacher Jeannette Gillett.
As a part of the ceramics unit, students will use hand methods to create miniature pots and sculptures.

Use of a pottery wheel will occur only at the high school level.
Several students were fascinated with the Lukacs pinching the wet clay to create the shape of a bowl and using special tools and stamps to perfect the design.
Students also remained engaged in the presentation by asking questions about the cost of the pottery wheel, how pottery designs are made and how to make lids for ceramic pots.
