OSWEGO, NY – Plans are under way for the third annual Farnham Family Services “Changing Lives Celebration†to be held Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. at The American Foundry.
The fundraising event will include a guest appearance and book signing by renowned journalist David Sheff, author of the No. 1 New York Time’s Best Seller “Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction.â€ÂÂ
Advance sale tickets are available for $25 per person and $35 for tickets purchased the day of the event.

This special event will include a book signing, dinner, entertainment and a silent art auction.
“We’re extremely excited about the upcoming fundraising event for Farnham Family Services,†said Jeanne Unger, director of the Oswego-based non-profit, chemical dependence outpatient substance abuse clinic, with prevention and school-based student assistance counseling services. “People are still talking about last year’s celebration with William Cope Moyers. And, we anticipate the same this year with David Sheff and his emotional struggles and inspirational success.â€ÂÂ
The event is a fundraising initiative for the Changing Lives Capital Appeal.
The agency’s goal for 2008 – 09 of $50,000 will help provide direct funding for Farnham’s student assistance programs and youth development.
Sheff will share the emotional rollercoaster of the struggles he and his family faced to help his eldest son, Nic, overcome his methamphetamine addiction.
While there have been many books written about addiction, Sheff shares the story not often told, of the family’s and father’s side of loving a child who seems beyond help.
The author’s story has won special awards for Outstanding Contribution to Advancing the Understanding of Addictions from the American Psychological Association and he has recently appeared on The Oprah Show and The Today Show to discuss his book.
Sheff’s book was based on his article “My Addicted Son,†which appeared in the New York Time’s Magazine and both have inspired (and continue to inspire) hundreds of letters from readers, many of whom are suffering from addiction or the addiction of a loved one.
According to Unger, Farnham Family Services is calling on individuals, businesses, and corporate partners, to help their non-profit organization continue to “change lives†in the Central New York community by considering a bequest in the way of a donation or by attending its annual event.
Farnham is also asking artists throughout Central New York to help with fundraising efforts by donating a piece from their portfolio for the silent auction.
As Farnham continues to expand services, participation and willingness to donate will be greatly appreciated.
“Farnham Family Services has provided so much to the families of Oswego and surrounding counties throughout our history,†Unger said. “And we hope to continue that mission for many more years to come with the help of this community.â€ÂÂ
