OSWEGO — The annual Feast of Carols on Sunday, Dec. 4, at SUNY Oswego, along with several other upcoming choral entertainments, will provide a musical welcome to the holiday season.
The Feast of Carols at 4 p.m. in Waterman Theatre will feature the State Singers and the College Choir offering songs and carols, new and old. Formerly a ticketed event, this year’s concert asks for donations of non-perishables for the Food Bank of Central New York, according to Clayborn Price, director of choral activities at SUNY Oswego. Parking is free in campus lots for those attending this event.
The following concerts are free and open to the public:
The State Singers, the select vocal jazz and chamber ensemble, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, in Waterman Theatre, including “In the Mood,” “Deck the Halls,” “Sleigh Ride” and Victoria’s “O Magnum Mysterium.”
SUNY Oswego’s College Choir will perform Americana, Psalm settings and seasonal songs at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, including “Stomp Your Foot” from the Aaron Copland opera “The Tender Land,” Viadana’s “Exulte Justi,” Sweelinck’s “Hodie Cristus natus est” and Rutter’s adaption of “12 Days of Christmas.”
Finally, the Festival Chorus, Oswego’s community-student choral ensemble, will present a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, in St. Paul’s Church, 50 E. Mohawk St. The group will feature the works of 20th century composers such as Benjamin Britten’s “A Ceremony of Carols” and Daniel Pinkham’s “Christmas Cantata.” Other pieces will include the U.S. premiere of British composer Cyril B. Rootham’s “Magnificat in F” from his 1906 “Evening Service for Double Choir.” Donations of non-perishables to the Food Bank of Central New York would be appreciated, organizers said.
