More than 30 professionals representing a variety of career fields spoke with students recently at the first-ever Granby Elementary School Career Day.
Special guests from various professions filled both the primary and intermediate wings at Granby. There were police officers, a flight attendant and pilot, hair stylist, judge, nurse, farmer, business owner, athletic trainer, ballet teacher, massage therapist, safety trainer and banker.
Students in first to sixth grade took an online survey in the library prior to career day, which matched their interests with an area of expertise.
Ballet teacher Danya Eades talk to students about the training involved in becoming a professional dancer, and how many dancers begin their pointe work as early as nine years old. Computer Technician Jacki Bovay spoke to students about being safe on social networking websites, and keeping identifying information private.
Architect Fred Koening showed students in his session blueprints of a structure and explained how much schooling is necessary for the job. Agriculturist Doug Collins talked about his career shift from a skills trade to farmer.
Together, he and his wife, Stephany Collins, a music teacher at Granby, operate Oakland Farms.
All presentations were followed with a question and answer session.
The first ever career day is part of the school’s improvement plan to prepare students to be college and career ready.
Students in first and second grade recently took a tour of Le Moyne College, while fourth and fifth graders visited Syracuse University.
