OSWEGO COUNTY – The Oswego County Tourism Advisory Council recognized former Oswego County Historian Justin White at its year-end meeting in December. The group presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award for all of his contributions toward growing and supporting the local tourism industry.

Daniel Breitweg, deputy director of the Oswego County Community Development, Tourism and Planning Department and Oswego County Legislator Mary Ellen Chesbro, District 10, chairwoman of the Legislature’s Economic Development and Planning Committee, were at hand for the presentation.

“The Lifetime Achievement Award is a special recognition honoring members who exemplify extraordinary support and dedication to the Oswego County tourism industry,” said Breitweg. “Justin has always been ready to share his expertise in tourism related projects and events. Over the years he has been involved in countless events, and his wealth of knowledge of the county’s history has made him a great resource to Oswego County Tourism and the community as a whole.”

Justin White was a long-standing member of the Oswego County Tourism Advisory Council and served as Oswego County Historian for more than 25 years. White was also board president of the Oswego County Historical Society and Heritage Foundation of Oswego County and a trustee of the Oswego Town Historical Society.

Throughout his career, White has welcomed thousands of visitors to the Richardson-Bates House Museum and helped organize many of its annual events and fundraisers, including the Victorian Christmas Open House, the Not-So-Silent Auction, and Classic Movie Night at Oswego Cinema.

White has presented numerous lectures and research on local history topics and led history tours for travel writers, local students and visiting groups and organizations. He also contributed to the publication of the Oswego County bicentennial history book, which was released in 2016 to celebrate the county’s 200th anniversary.

“We thank Justin for his commitment of time and energy to the Oswego County tourism industry and appreciate his many years of service,” said Breitweg.

Past recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award include Lillian Harter in 2012 and Rose Driscoll in 2014.

Members of the Oswego County Tourism Advisory Council are appointed by the Oswego County Legislature Chairman and represent recreational businesses, organizations and attractions, historic sites and museums, and events throughout Oswego County.
