Fulton, NY – In recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day, Friends of Recovery Oswego County will host an End of Summer Recovery Rally. To be held August 16th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Fallbrook, 103 Thompson Road in Oswego, the End of Summer Recovery Rally is a family friendly event that is free and open to the community.
International Overdose Awareness Day seeks to raise awareness of overdose, one of the world’s worst public health crises.
“Our End of Summer Recovery Rally is an opportunity to bring the community together to address the risk of drug overdose, and let those in recovery know that they are valued,” said Friends of Recovery Oswego County Executive Director Virginia Bough.
In addition to a number of summer activities and games there will also be hot dogs, hamburgers, popcorn, non-fire s’mores, and lemonade for all that attend.
Bough said that the purpose of the event is to share with the community the Friends of Recovery Oswego County’s mission of addressing the needs of those impacted by opioids or substance use disorder in a non-clinical, non-judgmental way, with a focus harm reduction and keeping people as healthy as possible.
Along with the fun, the End of Summer Rally will also include a time for remembrance and wellness activities.
“We will be releasing remembrance lanterns, encourage conversations about as to why we are there, and inviting those who have lost a loved one to overdose to share their story if they like,” added Bough.
Friends of Recovery staff will be on hand to discuss overdose prevention and solutions, including Naloxone training to reverse an opioid overdose. There will also be a number of harm reduction supplies available as well.
“I invite community members to join us for our End of Summer Rally, an enjoyable and informational event where they can learn about Friends of Recovery Oswego County and our commitment to end overdose and related harms,” added Bough.
Established to address stigma and improve the understanding and acceptance of substance use disorder as a chronic disease, Friends of Recovery Oswego County recently opened its Recovery Community Outreach Center at 808 West Broadway. The center is a safe space that addresses the needs of people that are impacted by opioids or substance use disorder in a non-clinical, non-judgmental way.
