FULTON, NY – Participants from the Fulton School Mentoring Program took part in the Fulton Memorial Day Parade to help spread the word about the positive results of mentoring youth.
The Fulton School Mentoring Program is a collaboration between Oswego County Opportunities, the Fulton Community Task Force, Catholic Charities of Oswego County and The Fulton School District.
It is a school-based mentoring program for Fulton youth ages 8-15.
All mentoring meetings last one hour per week following the school calendar and take place at the Fulton Elementary schools between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m.
The youth being mentored are from all four elementary schools and the junior high school.
The mentors are adult volunteers from all over Oswego County.
They are supported through on-going training that begins before they are matched with a youth.
The mentors and youth are paired by their similar interests and personalities.
For the youth, a mentor acts as a role model, tutor, listener and friend.
Being a mentor makes a difference in the lives of the youth they meet with.
Research shows that there are improvements in the youth’s academic achievement, social skills, self-esteem, and behavior.
Just one hour a week makes a difference.

The Fulton School Mentoring Program is fully funded by a DCJS grant.
