FULTON – Cory Hanson was promoted to Executive Officer, Lt Commander, of the air squadron VT-22 at the Kingsville Naval Air Station in Kingsville, Texas.
He will become commander next year when the current commander’s tenure is over.
A native of Syracuse, New York, U.S. Navy Commander Cory J. Hanson graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2005, earning a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering.
CDR Hanson commissioned in 2005 through the Officer Candidate School Program and reported to NAS Pensacola, FL for flight training in December 2005.
Hanson holds masters degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florida, and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College.
In 2008, after earning his Wings of Gold in Kingsville, Texas, CDR Hanson reported to the VAW-120 “Greyhawks” for initial fleet training as a C-2A Greyhound pilot. CDR Hanson’s first operational assignment was with the “Providers” of Fleet Logistics Support Squadron THREE ZERO (VRC-30) from 2009-2012. He completed five detachments aboard the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), USS John C. Stennis (CVN 72) and USS Nimitz (CVN 68) in support of two Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercises, Operations ENDURING FREEDOM, and Operations NEW DAWN.
His subsequent operational assignments include Officer-In-Charge of VRC-30 Detachment Two “Roughnecks” aboard Carrier Air Wing (CVW) TWO, deploying in support of USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) during its patrol of the western pacific in January of 2018 and summer RIMPAC exercise. Ashore, Hanson served as a T-6A instructor pilot at VT-10, and Naval Education Training Command as a flag aide. In 2020, Hanson attended the Naval War College for in-resident Joint Professional Military Education.
Hanson selected as the 2012 West Coast Greyhound Pilot of the Year. His personal decorations include Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals (3 awards), and numerous campaign and unit citations. He has accumulated over 2,300 flight hours.
