It may have been after school hours, but the hallways of Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Elementary School were bottlenecked Sept. 30 as hundreds of parents, students and teachers showed up for the school’s universal pre-kindergarten to second-grade open house.
Prior to any interaction in the classrooms, parents and teachers met in the school’s gymnasium where principals Michael McAuliff and Julie Woolson hosted an assembly and discussed building-wide goals and expectations.
The goals include fostering the culture of learning, increasing student attendance by 2 percent, improving student performance in the Common Core Learning Standards and increasing the number of students reading on grade level.
According to Woolson, outlining the building goals for parents and having the adults on board to reinforce these expectations allows students to be even more successful.
“We wanted to share our building goals because in order for us to be successful, we need you to help with that,” Woolson told the crowd. “We really have to work together.”
Following the assembly, parents and students traveled to their respective classrooms, where teachers discussed student expectations and goals for the coming year.
Several teachers, including kindergarten teacher Valerie Wade, utilized the event to show parents the progress their children have made thus far this school year.
The hallways were also lined with student projects and artwork, giving parents the opportunity to view their child’s creativity and vision.
The school will host its second open house, which will include third through sixth grades, Oct. 6.
