Gov. David Paterson appointed James McMahon of Central Square to SUNY Oswego’s College Council this summer and this month designated him the panel’s chair. McMahon presided over his first meeting Friday, Oct. 24.
A former first deputy commissioner of the state Department of Agriculture and Markets, McMahon owns and operates McMahon Farms. He is a member of the New York State Grange Agricultural Committee and former president of the Oswego County Farm Bureau.
McMahon was elected to the Oswego County Legislature in 1990, serving until 2003, and was minority leader of the Legislature for seven years. He also served the Town of Hastings as a councilman and as supervisor. He received the Civic Award from the Health Services Association of Central New York.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing and transportation logistics from the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University. He has worked as a sales representative for Pioneer Hi-Bred International.
McMahon is a member of the Central Square Lions Club and Knights of Columbus. He is former president of the Central Square Lacrosse Boosters and a former member of Oswego County Cooperative Extension, Oswego Housing Council, New Justice and Oswego Opera Theatre. He is married and has two children.
The SUNY Oswego College Council has 10 members, nine appointed by the governor plus the student-elected president of the Student Association.
Besides McMahon, members include Jane Backus of Mexico, Darlene Baker of Bernhards Bay, Saleem Cheeks of Albany, Paul Culligan of Troy, Mike Goldych of Oswego, Stephen Greene Sr. of Oswego, Daniel Nau of SA, David Poleto of Latham and Carolyn Rush of Oswego.
