AMBOY – The Great Backyard Bird Count began in 1998 when the Cornell Lab of Ornithology joined with the National Audubon Society to launch this online citizen-science project to gather information about wild birds – the first of its kind.
Now participants can join more than 160,000 Citizen Scientists from more than 130 countries.
They simply count the birds they see for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the count, February 16-19.
They can count from any location, anywhere in the world, for as long as they’d like, and then share that information (in real-time if able) with participants worldwide, including photos and even sounds.
People interested in participating are invited to attend a workshop at the Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center on January 28 at 2 p.m
This workshop will help participants prepare themselves for the Great Backyard Bird Count.
Attendees will learn how to identify birds and how to participate in this citizen science opportunity.
There is a program fee of just $4 per person or $12 per family, and children under three are free.
Pre-registration is requested by January 22.
