OSWEGO, NY – The H. Lee White Marine Museum along with representatives from the Town of Oswego recently unveiled a new exhibit highlighting Medal of Honor recipient and Town of Oswego civil war hero, James H. Lee and his service aboard the U.S. Sloop of War, Kearsarge during the Civil War.
A brief discussion was presented to 52 guests by Ted Panayotoff, historian and museum volunteer about Lee and the 1864 Battle off Cherbourg, France, of the Kearsarge and the Confederate Ship, Alabama.
In addition, to the town representatives, Theresa Cooper (Town Clerk), George DeMass (Town Historian) and County Legislator Doug Malone; resident Dennis Place, a descendant of Lee, attended the affair.
“We are pleased to highlight a Town of Oswego hero within the museum’s new exhibits. We are also grateful to the Place Clark King family for their donation and to thank Ted Panayotoff for his research and efforts to develop this exhibit,” said Mercedes Niess, Executive Director of the H. Lee White Marine Museum.
The H. Lee White Marine Museum Sea Scouts Ship 229 Division was also on hand to greet visitors and serve refreshments.
The H. Lee White Marine Museum is located at the end of the pier in the Historic Maritime District at the end of West First Street Pier in Oswego.
It is open Monday through Sunday from 1-5 p.m.
