OSWEGO – The Oswego County Historical, Mexico Historical Society, and Oswego Public Library are proudly co-hosting a Living History Presentation entitled “Harriet Tubman – The Love in That Cabin.”

It will be held on Wednesday July 13 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the historic landmark Oswego Public Library at 120 E. Second St., Oswego.

Carolyn Evans, of Raleigh, N.C., will interpret the legendary life of Harriet Tubman in a unique style Histro-Drama performance. Evans is a graduate of Syracuse University, attended SUNY New Paltz, Marymount College, and the City University of New York.

She has appeared at the Apollo Theater, the Seneca Falls Women’s Rights National Historical Park, on PBS and CNN television channels, and at numerous libraries, schools and historic sites throughout the Northeast and the South. She presents the music and stories of a variety of African American historical figures.

Harriet Tubman was known as the “The Moses of Her People.” She was born enslaved, and very fortunately as a young woman was able to escape and claim her freedom. Tubman also became known as a “conductor” of the Underground Railroad. She brought freedom to dozens of enslaved people in dangerous trips through the South, risking her own freedom and life.

During the American Civil War, she provided her service as an armed scout, spy, and nurse for the Union Army. After the war, she connected with the women’s suffrage movement and raised funds to aid freedmen.

Tubman lastly settled in Auburn, New York. She established a home for the aged on the property she proudly owned, and where her own home was located. This site is now a National Historical Park and open to the public. Tubman became an icon for courage and freedom.

This one-woman show is an hour long, and it will be followed by a chance to speak to the actress and ask questions. Due to limited capacity, the general admission of $5 each must be paid in advance to reserve a seat. Any additional donations to support the sponsoring organizations is greatly appreciated.

The advance reservation must be made in person at the Oswego Public Library. For any questions about the one-night only presentation contact the library by phone at (315) 341-5867. missing or outdated ad config
