OSWEGO COUNTY — The Village of Mexico is proud to announce its continued commitment to downtown revitalization through an application to the New York Forward program. Building on years of planning, investment, and community collaboration, Mexico is positioning itself as a hub of economic growth, cultural heritage, and community pride.
“Our community has spoken, and we’ve listened,” said Mayor Terry Grimshaw. “The projects in this proposal reflect the needs and dreams of our residents; from safe sidewalks and a vibrant park to restored buildings and new business opportunities. The Village is ready to flourish.”
The proposal outlines projects that will strengthen Main Street, preserve historic character, and enhance quality of life. Planned improvements include sidewalk repair and construction for safe, ADA-compliant walkways; façade and accessibility upgrades to restore historic buildings; park enhancements creating a family-friendly gathering space; streetscape and lighting improvements; and a cohesive marketing, branding, and signage initiative to attract visitors and support local businesses.
Mexico’s proposal builds on a foundation of recent investments, including water distribution and wastewater upgrades, cemetery beautification, and downtown demolitions that open space for public parking and green areas. After a long wait, the Beck’s Hotel project is moving forward under new ownership, with Empire State Development approving the transfer of a $1.8 million grant to the new team. Recent private investments add to this progress, including a $1.4 million NAPA Auto Parts store, $450,000 toward the new Urban Athletics training complex, and a 14-lot single-family subdivision taking shape on Hamilton Street.
Public engagement has been central to planning, with surveys, forums, and workshops shaping priorities such as safer sidewalks, more dining options, improved public spaces, and preservation of the Village’s heritage. “Every one of these projects came from community input,” said John Power, Village Administrator. “This isn’t just a plan from administrators; it’s Mexico’s residents shaping the future they want to see.”
With the upcoming Micron Technology facility nearby and strong regional job growth, Mexico is well-positioned to attract new residents, businesses, and visitors. Collaboration with Mexico Academy, local nonprofits, and state partners ensures revitalization efforts are sustainable, inclusive, and forward-looking.
From festivals, farmer’s markets, and summer concerts to thriving small businesses and new green spaces, Mexico’s downtown is set to become a vibrant destination for residents and visitors. “This is more than a proposal,” said Morgan Spencer, MSPEN Consulting, the Village’s grant consultant. “Mexico has laid the groundwork, and now we’re ready to bring these transformative projects to life.”
