‘History on Tap’ Highlights Local Legend May 1

OSWEGO – ‘History on Tap’ returns with a presentation on local author Lee Ellen Hickey’s new novel, “Girl in the Glass Coffin: The Tonkin Affairs,” based on the true story of young Virginia Tonkin and her untimely death. The event takes place on Wednesday, May 1 at 7 p.m. in the Riverview Room at G.S. Steamers Restaurant in the Clarion Hotel, 70 E. First St., Oswego. Admission is free.

Known by local legend as “the girl in the glass coffin,” Virginia Tonkin was only 10 years old when she tragically died. The Tonkin family sparked a curious and controversial tale by keeping Virginia’s body in the family home for 15 months, placing her in a coffin with a sealed glass lid.

“Girl in the Glass Coffin: The Tonkin Affairs” explores the shocking circumstances of the Tonkin Family, including how they continued to endure dark events and emotional torrent for years after Virginia’s death. From threats for ransom against the youngest Tonkin child to a Tonkin son risking the family reputation with his reckless behavior, this historical fiction novel is full of tragedy, intrigue, romance, betrayal, mystery, scandal and even murder.

Hickey will discuss her novel in its entirety (and also share additional details about Virginia Tonkin), so attendees are encouraged to finish their reading before this presentation.
