Oswego, NY – Oswego High School Class of 2012 Graduate Jeffrey Murray has been named the recipient of the 2012 Elmer G. Hadlow Memorial Music Scholarship, which is awarded annually to an Oswego High School student who pursues an education and/or career in music.

The $500 annual scholarship was established in 2005, upon the passing of Elmer G. Hadlow, a longtime resident of Oswego, and strong advocate of music in the Oswego community. Hadlow sang for over 50 years in church choirs, barbershop quartets and choruses throughout Oswego County and Central New York.

“We’re thrilled to present this year’s scholarship to a student who has such a strong love for music,” said Hadlow’s family members. “We look forward to hearing about his Jeff’s musical pursuits in college and thereafter.”

Rebecca Smith was the 2011 scholarship recipient.

Murray, is the son of Thomas and Donalee Murray, and plans to pursue music studies at Onondaga Community College. He also hopes to join the United States Army Band after college, and ultimately be a performer and work in the music industry.

“Since I was little, I have always been encouraged to reach for the stars,” said Murray. “Playing music on the big stage is my life-long pursuit.”

Murray has been actively involved in musical programs throughout his high school academic career. He has participated in the Oneida Jazz Festival since 2009 and was awarded best drummer in class AAA for 2011-12 along with best rhythm section in 2011. He also participated in the NYSSMA Solo Fest, All County Band, All County Orchestra, Alternate All State Jazz Band, 3 Bands of America Competitions, NYS Field Band Competitions, and participated in numerous other parades and events over the past 3 years.

Murray was also selected for the prestigious US Army All American Marching Band in 2012 on drumset.
