OSWEGO, NY – On Oct. 30, Katherine Barnum told the Oswego Sunrise Rotary Club about the year she spent as a Rotary exchange student in Venezuela.
Katherine arrived in Venezuela in January 2007, equipped with six years of Spanish to learn, she did not understand her host parents or teachers.
By February, she was dreaming in Spanish.
Katherine spoke only Spanish and had not even talked with her mother in America.
Her experience led the freshman at Cayuga Community College to a Spanish tutoring position at the college.
Although the leader Hugo Chavez, is hostile to America, the blond green-eyed Katherine was well-treated during her year in Venezuela.
The people are friendly and interested in American culture and sports.
She spent half a year in a private high school and half in a college.
Each year Rotary International sends more than 8,000 young people on exchanges.
The Oswego Sunrise Rotary Club meets each Thursday at 6:30 a.m. at the Oswego Tea Company, 157 E. First St.
