Lanigan students visit Pratt House Museum

FULTON – Students at Lanigan Elementary School took a step back in time during their recent visit to the John Wells Pratt House Museum in Fulton.

The fourth graders learned a great deal about what life was like during the turn of the 19th century when the large house was occupied by the Pratt family.

The family’s business was building canal boats and the students learned about the importance of the river and the canal system in the state.

The museum also featured several rooms set up as they would have been when the family occupied the home.

Other rooms also held complete displays showcasing various collections of items significant to the area such as phones, firearms, maps and manufacturing in the area during the late 1800s and early 1900s, while another room looked at the lighter side of the early era and focused on toys.

Tour guides Alec Seymour and Karen O’Brien talked to the students about the history of the area along with personal stories about the Pratt family to give students a deeper insight into a time when life was very different from what students experience today.

The museum is located at 177 S. First St. and is open to the public.
