OSWEGO – Frederick Leighton Elementary school celebrated its 6th Annual Read-A-Thon on October 28.

Leighon Home & School Association hosts the event each fall “to promote literacy and a love of reading in our students as reading is an integral part of educational success. The more our children read or are read to – the more success they will have in school!”

With help from parents, family and friends, grades K-6 were challenged to read a total of 240 minutes for 10 days.

This is a community event; kids can choose to read to their family members or if the kids cannot read on their own, families were encouraged to read to them.

This fall’s top readers for grades K-3rd were Megan Campbell, 540 minutes; Reagan Wood and Brodie Wood with 570 minutes; and Riley Delles with 1,380.

In grades 4-6, the top readers were Kevin Waters with 734 minutes; Anna Cloonan with 765 minutes; and Margaret O’Leary with 871 minutes.

Leighton staff and families are very proud of all of our readers this year.

The top readers in each category also get to be “Principal for the Day,” a much sought after prize!

While not a requirement, the students may also ask family and friends for pledges to support their efforts.

Funds are used to purchase additional prizes and for a celebration for all of our readers.

In addition, the top K-3 and 4-6 classrooms with the greatest percent of participation will also receive a classroom party.

The remaining funds are used to support events such as family movie nights, classroom celebrations, school field trips, a building wide end of the picnic and more.

Home & School is also fortunate to receive support from community organizations.

Many thanks to Burger King, Cam’s Pizzeria, Canale’s Restaurant, Children’s Museum of Oswego, Cup Cakers, Friendly’s, Harbor Towne Gifts, Man in the Moon Candies, Mark’s Pizzeria, Mother Earth Baby, Oswego Health, Oswego Federal Credit Union, Pathfinder Bank, River’s End Bookstore, Stone’s Candy Shop, The Comic Shop, Wal-Mart, and Yoberry for supplying some amazing prizes for the winners.
