The Literacy Coalition of Oswego County will host a free literacy event, “Fizz! Boom! Read!,” noon to 3 p.m. on Nov. 15 at Lura Sharp Elementary School, 2 Hinman Road, Pulaski, it was announced by Jennifer Cook and Meg Henderson, event co-chairs.
“The event promises to be a wonderful celebration of literacy and the joy of reading for all ages from pre-school through adults,” Henderson said. “There will be a multitude of activities for families throughout the day. Among these are balloon animals, craft projects and the ARISE Unique Art Exhibit. Kids will also get the chance to interact with local authors, The Cat in the Hat and Dr. Health E. Hound characters, and enter to win door prizes.”
This year’s READ Event theme, Fizz! Boom! Read! is the same reading theme adopted by local libraries for their summer reading programs.
“What’s exciting about this year’s theme is the focus on science and technology,” Cook said. “This year’s theme has opened a new world of opportunities for the annual event. We are excited to have science demonstrations and other ‘hands on’ activities that will be exciting for children of all ages.”
Some of the planned demonstrations include a Light Show and Science demonstration by locally-known Oswego High School physics teacher Tom Altman, robotics demonstrations by students from the Fulton Junior High School and G. Ray Bodley High School Robotics Team, and displays from Entergy and Exelon Nuclear Power.
Among the authors scheduled to appear are: Lisa Davis, “Fairies in my Flowerbeds;” Jim Farfaglia, “Camp Hollis: the Origins of Oswego County’s Children’s Camp;” Margaret Streitenberger, “Did The Cow Really Jump Over The Moon?;” Connie Evans, “Charlotte’s Big Dream;” Marjorie Wentworth, “The Ball;” Jo Ann Butler, “Rebel Puritan;” and Joe Abbatte/C.V. Abbott, “Classified Terminally Ill: A Young Man’s Story of Beating the Odds.”
Children who visit all the education provider booths can enter to win door prizes.
Some of the providers participating are: Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County; Oswego County Opportunities Headstart; Oswego County Workforce NY; Oswego County Library Council; ARISE; Cayuga Community College; Center for Instruction Technology and Innovation (formerly Oswego County BOCES); United Healthcare, Oswego County Family Court, NY State Assemblyman Will Barclay; Rural Health Network; and more.
“We also want to thank Mitchell’s Speedway Press for donating printing services to help promote our event,” Henderson said.
“The goal of The Literacy Coalition of Oswego County is to empower our community to build literacy in a collaborative, inclusive and comprehensive manner,” said Jon Spaulding, coalition chairperson. “The Coalition is dedicated to supporting and expanding literacy services so that people can work, the economy can grow, families can thrive, and our community can prosper.”
The LCOC is a growing coalition of more than 36 local organizations.
These organizations work together to address the literacy needs of people of all ages.

An estimated 40 to 44 million adults in the United States demonstrate skills in the lowest level of prose, document, and quantitative proficiencies.
Many are unable to total an entry on a deposit slip, locate the time and place on a meeting form, or identify a piece of specific information in a brief news article (ProLiteracy Worldwide).
In Oswego County, close to 17,000 adults cannot read above a fifth grade reading level.
With the help of volunteers, donors and advocates, the Literacy Coalition of Oswego County helps adults develop their basic literary skills.
