OSWEGO, NY – On July 15, more than 80 people gathered at Breitbeck Park in Oswego for the Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County (LVOC) annual meeting and awards ceremony.
The evening began with a picnic for attendees and their families and concluded with a presentation of awards.
This event gives the organization an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of its outstanding students and tutors and to express appreciation to all of its supporters.
The highlight of the evening was the enthusiasm of two students who shared how they benefited from the program and tutor Jennifer Bisbo as she shared what LVOC means to the tutors.
The ability to read is one of the most important skills needed in daily life but it is often taken for granted. The students have recognized the importance of this skill.
Assemblyman Will Barclay, county legislators Barry Leemann and Paul Santore, Oswego Mayor Randy Bateman and Judge David Roman addressed the courage of the students in pursuing the ability to read and the generosity of the volunteers for their time and dedication.
The 2008 awards were presented to Mike Kemp, Learner of the Year; Darlene Jodway, Most Improved Student; Kristen Binder, Personal Progress; Denise Sarandis, Outstanding Dedication; Bisbo, Tutor of the Year; and Deb Jaskula, Volunteer of the Year.
Award winners also received commendations from Senator Darrell Aubertine and Assemblyman Barclay.
The goal of LVOC is to provide opportunities for adults to achieve personal freedom by building basic reading, writing and technology skills in a confidential environment at no cost.
